Health Dept. Hearing

Last week I had my hearing at the Health Department and, ironically, the magistrate made it known that he knew a great deal about bees because his father was a beekeeper in Trinidad and was still trying to get him to come home and "run the business." (The inspector who came to my house in response to the original complaint also knew bees; his father raised them back home in Afghanistan and his uncle raised bees in Long Island.) I donated my hive to the Queens County Farm Museum and had documents to prove it, but they weren't interested, just took my word for it. I made a little speech about my training and the Yassky bill to license beekeepers. The magistrate listened without much interest. I was asked to return to the waiting room for the verdict, which I received a half hour later: "Admitted and Corrected". $200 please. You can appeal, but I decided not to bother.
It might be a good idea for everyone to call Joel Rivera's office and ask for a hearing on the Yassky bill. (See my old posting with all the pertinent contact info.) - Deborah Romano

Hi Deborah,
I am a student doing a project on beekeeping in New York City, particularly in Queens. Would you be available to talk?
